KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza’s remarks against the MQM were like a “fixed cricket match” and therefore people should not expect any development to follow, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Munawar Hassan said on Thursday.
The JI leader was talking to the media after addressing a gathering in Akthar Colony. “PPP leaders Dr Mirza and Agha Siraj Durani have said similar things in the Sindh Assembly about the MQM’s involvement in assassinations, but nothing has happened because President Asif Ali Zardari later silenced them.” Responding to a question, Hassan said that the JI does not see chances of mid-term elections.
“The PPP is responsible for the situation in the country. A movement against the government is a democratic norm and the JI is informing people about US influence in the country in its campaign.” He sarcastically aked how Maulana Fazlur Rehman was unaware about US policies but continued supporting the pro-US government? To a question about the revival of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) – an alliance of religious parties – that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had not convened a meeting of the alliance so far.
“But many matters will have to be clarified before an MMA meeting can be held,” he said.
He told the media that the JI would encourage a countrywide strike by religious parties on December 31 against the government’s possible move to amend the blasphemy law and a large public meeting would also be held in Karachi on January 9.
