ISLAMABAD: An official of the US spy agency, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), on Monday assured Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani of continued US support to Pakistan, saying that neither the Obama administration nor the State Department had any role in the WikiLeaks revelations and stern action would be taken if any official was found involved in the leaks.
CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell met Gilani at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
A diplomatic source informed Pakistan Today that Morell told the prime minister that investigations into the leaks were underway and the Pakistan government would be informed of its outcome. He said Pakistan was a close ally of the US in the war against terrorism and any sort of misunderstanding would not be allowed to affect the relationship.
During the meeting, Gilani underlined the need for a common strategy by Pakistan, the US, the allied forces and Afghanistan to fight terrorism. He hoped for enhanced cooperation between the three sides on defence, security and intelligence matters.
The source said the meeting also discussed dialogue between the Afghan government and the Taliban and various proposals were discussed.
“Pakistan will support the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process in order to bring about peace and stability in that country as and when the reconciliation strategy by the Afghan government is shared with Pakistan,” Gilani said.
The outcome of Lisbon-NATO summit with reference to the new exit strategy of NATO and ISAF forces from Afghanistan, reconciliation and reintegration efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s front-line role in campaign against terrorism and cooperation between Pakistan and the US in defence and security areas also came under discussion.
