ISLAMABAD: Interior Ministry has failed to produce the reconciled accounts worth Rs 515 million, it collected as fee for arms licences during April 2008 to June 2009 despite repeated directions from the Auditor General of Pakistan, Pakistan Today learnt.
The Interior Division issued 88,838 arms licences during the said period. Fee for these licences was estimated Rs 515 million and it was to be deposited into the government treasury. However, the receipts were not reconciled with the treasury, leaving a possibility that licences were issued against fake receipts.
A source in the ministry told Pakistan Today that the Auditor General of Pakistan had directed the Interior Ministry in March 2009 to produce the reconciliation statement before it for verification. At the beginning of 2010, the AGP again directed the ministry to produce the reconciled accounts of the entire amount within 15 days.
“The ministry is still not in a position to submit the reconciliation statement to the AGP”, he added. The source revealed that the Interior Minister had established a committee to re-structuring the accounts, which was checking every case and had found various licences issued on fake receipts.
