ISLAMABAD: The government on Monday notified lifting of the ban on the export of wheat and wheat products through an amendment in the imports and exports control act. The Ministry of Commerce notified changes in the Export Policy Order 2009 allowing exports of wheat and wheat products after a gap of three years.
Earlier the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet (ECC) had approved export of one million tonnes of wheat on December 7. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MINFA) had sought to lift the ban on the export of wheat, as the country has two million tonnes of surplus, out of reserve of more than six million tonnes.
MINFA said that the estimated price of locally procured wheat and international wheat prices was at break even level, making wheat exports possible without involving any subsidy. ECC had decided that the wheat exports would only be made through the private sector.
