ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is expected to harvest a production of 11 million bales of cotton this year despite the biblical floods. This was assessed at a meeting of the Cotton Crop Assessment Committee held under the chairmanship of Minister for Food Nazar Gondal here on Monday.
The minister stated that efforts to boost cotton production for meeting domestic and industrial demand were underway. He added that usage of certified cotton seeds and agreement with Monsanto for the introduction of BT cotton would play a pivotal role in fulfilling the aforementioned objective. The meeting also approved a budget of Rs 288.7 million for the Pakistan Central Cotton Committee and decided to increase cotton cess from Rs 20 to Rs 50 per bale.
