‘Child marriage is the bane of society’

LAHORE: Society for Protection of the Rights of Child (SPARC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), launched a campaign against child marriage on Sunday by organising a press conference at the Lahore Press Club. SPARC Programme Coordinator Imran Javed Qureshi said that the NGO had launched a two-week campaign titled “Stop Child Marriage”, as child marriages were illegal, basic root cause of many family disputes and injurious to the girl’s health owing to early pregnancy and other complications. He said that immaturity of young couples, avoiding family planning and harmful customary practices were root causes of family problems in society. Thousands of family cases regarding divorce, khula and minors’ custody were pending in family courts.
Qureshi said that these were blinking signs of family disputes, marriage failures and minors’ future was at risk. Upbringing of children in absence of parents not only threatened their future and role in society but also increased the crime rate, he said. Qureshi informed journalists that SPARC was launching the awareness campaign nationwide and the campaign would continue in 10 Punjab districts including Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Sialkot, Muzzaffargarh, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jehlum, Multan and Lahore for creating awareness against child marriages. SPARC officials requested the print and electronic media to highlight the issue as much as they could for creating awareness against child marriages in order to save future generations.
