LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad said Thursday he wanted no controversy during the New Zealand tour and that was why he decided to limit his role as batting consultant.
Talking to journalists here on the sidelines of the national team training camp, Miandad said that the sole responsibility of the team lies with the chief coach and he did not want to disrupt one coaching mind. After spending two days with the team as batting consultant, he said that the national cricket team was on the right track and he would further fine tune their techniques in the lead up to the World Cup. Miandad said that he would try to use his vast experience to help out struggling batsmen. “This is right time for the players to learn a thing or two from us,” he said.
“We have one week to discuss a few things and work on them before the team leaves for New Zealand,” he added.
He also hinted that he would be happy to have complete authority rather than work under somebody. He said that too many cooks spoil the broth. He believed that additional coach in the already appointed coaching team would create trouble for the players. “I would teach them what they should be doing in certain situations and at the tour they are to execute what they have learnt at the camp,” he added.
Miandad met PCB chairman Ijaz Butt to clear his role after he and Waqar Younis had a war of words. However, after meeting with the chairman, he accepted the assignment and said that the chairman agreed with his view point. Miandad said he wants an independent assignment but the PCB was adamant that he reports to Waqar.
“I don’t have any ego problem. I believe that Waqar is team’s coach and he should have authority. I can give with my tips on batting, fielding and even wicket-keeping because I have the necessary experience and believe that the boys can benefit from it.”
