LAHORE: The 27th Governor’s Cup Golf Championship tees off today at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course providing an opportunity to some skillful amateurs of the country to excel over the next three days for the net trophy.
Addressing a press conference here at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Lounge, Media Director Khawaja Parvaiz Saeed gave details of the December 10-14 activity which would be featuring over 130 amateur contenders while a large number of seniors, and veterans have also registered to swell the number of participants.
Around 60 seniors and 35 veterans of the game would be seen in action. Nearly a dozen ladies would bring their charm to the competition showing their abilities to swing and putt.
Parvaiz said that Millat Tractors have maintained their 18 years old association with the Cup and that pledge was also made by Sikandar Mustafa Khan, head of the MTL, by maintaining that they have supported the game for 18 years. Sardar Murad, Captain Gold Lahore Gymkhana, was also present on the occasion.
Parvaiz informed that the main competitions in net and gross that will be played over the next three days would be on 54 holes while ladies would compete for 36 holes and seniors and veterans would go for 18 and nine. In the net and gross categories handicappers of 14 and below would be fighting to be recognized in the golfing fraternity
He said: “In the game, attaining a handicap of four and below is considered an honour and an achievement and quite a few golfers of the caliber are taking part in this event.
There will also be some who could surprise and some who could wilt despite having the same handicap and would give some jitters to defending champion Mohammad Nasir Irshad of Lahore Gymkhana.
His closest competitors would be Masood Elahi Piracha, Mahad Zafar, Imran Mian, Mian Tariq Pervez, Mohammad Hamza Asif, Dildar Hussain Chaudhry, Mehmood Janjua and Mohammad Khan Leghari.
Mohsin Anwar is the tournament director while Rai Aziz Ullah is the match referee.
Millat Tractor Limiter Chief Sikandar Mustafa Khan would tee off the event at 9 am while the closing ceremony will be held at 4 pm on Sunday December 12 and Punjab Governor Salman Taseer will be the chief guest.
