KARACHI: The Sindh government has asked the Interior Ministry to ensure that the Pakistan Army stays prepared during Muharram 8, 9 and 10 in case it has to be called out to maintain law and order during these sensitive days. The Home Department has made this request in a letter recently dispatched to the Interior Ministry.
“Even though there is no need to deploy troops in the province, they will only remain alert to help the law enforcing agencies in case any major incident takes place during this period,” an official source told Pakistan Today.
The source added that the Interior Ministry has asked provincial officials to have the army deployed in the provinces during the sensitive days of Muharram, but the Sindh Home Department did not find this necessary and wanted the army to remain alert during these days so it could be called out only in the wake of an emergency.
The town police officers are evolving a security plan to provide security to all mourning procession, which would be simultaneously taken out on the eve of Ashura. There are around 600 locations in the city, which might be declared sensitive.
The official said that the plan primarily includes security arrangements at mosques, imambargahs and other venues of religious gatherings. Rangers and police would also be deployed on the rooftops of around 150 buildings along the processions routes.
