KARACHI: More than three years after a case was lodged against 16-year-old Asif for raping his maternal uncle Raza Khan’s 18-year-old wife, and a little over two years after he murdered Khan, Asif was sentenced earlier this week to 10 years in prison for the rape, and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
According to a press release issued by War Against Rape (WAR), which has been pursuing the case since the start, an FIR regarding the rape was lodged on July 27, 2007. The trial had begun on December 4 the same year when bail was granted to Asif, who was accused of threatening his maternal uncle’s wife with a kitchen knife and raping her while her husband was away at work.
Despite an ongoing court case for charges as serious as assault and rape, Asif was granted enough freedom to stalk Khan and his wife when the couple went to Hyderabad on leave, where, on June 18, 2008, he entered their house and shot Khan dead with an AK-47.
On December 3, 2010, the court of the fifth additional sessions judge at the City Courts, Karachi, sentenced Asif to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs10,000 for the rape. The other cases against him, including that of the murder of his maternal uncle, are still underway.
