I’m happy Sharif is going: Asma

LAHORE: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President and renowned human rights activist Asma Jahangir said on Tuesday that she was happy on Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif’s retirement and hopes that upcoming LHC CJ Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry would not repeat his predecessor’s mistakes.
She made these remarks while talking to journalists at the LHC premises. Commenting on the LHC CJ’s statement that he would work for people’s welfare, Asma said that he should not do that kind of ‘welfare’, which he did with the bench and bar during his tenure as the CJ. The SCBA president said that she welcomed the new LHC CJ and hoped that he would try to develop good relations between the bench and bar.
She said that the upcoming LHC CJ should consider all legal aspects before taking suo motu notice of any issue. Asma said that the number of missing people was increasing once again. The SCBA president said that barring PCO judges from performing their duties was unconstitutional and the Supreme Judicial Council should decide that which was the competent forum in this regard.
LHCBA hosts farewell party for CJ
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) hosted a farewell tea party in outgoing Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif’s honour on Tuesday. All LHC judges and LHCBA office bearers attended the party.
Lahore High Court Bar Association President Abdul Qadoos and other lawyers exchanged farewell greetings with the Lahore High Court Chief Justice and the party ended in a dignified manner without any untoward incident being reported.
The Lahore High Court Chief Justice discussed his post-retirement plans with judges and lawyers and said that he might work on welfare projects. Despite all efforts, the farewell party lacked the traditional warmth, which the bench and bar shared with each other.
Tensions between both the sides over the transfer issue of Lahore District and Sessions Judge Zawar Ahmed Sheikh and the police crackdown on lawyers had created an unbridgeable gulf between both the sides. The Lahore High Court Chief Justice and other judges did not visit the LHCBA bar rooms to avoid any untoward incident. Staff Report
