ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday signed the Sacked Employees (Reinstatement) Bill, 2010, which would provide a legal cover to thousands of emloyees reinstated by the PPP government who had been sacked in 1997 by the Nawaz Sharif government.
“The critics of present government sometimes accuse it of not providing jobs to the people. Yes, the job market has shrunk due to world wide economic slow down and recession.
But I ask the critics; is the reinstatement of thousands of sacked employees not giving them jobs?” argued Zardari while addressing a gathering of ministers and PPP office-bearers on the occasion. The PML-N had been voicing concern against the reinstatement bid, saying the appointments were made by the PPP government in 1996 to accommodate its blue-eyed party workers and that the Supreme Court had also upheld the government decision of sacking the employees in many cases.
Addressing the gathering, President Zardari congratulated all workers who had been reinstated through the act. The president said workers and labourers were the backbone of the economy.
