ISLAMABAD: Following Sunday’s car race in Islamabad that killed five people, police on Monday said cases had been registered against the driver of the car, the Bahria Town management, and the chief organiser of the race, Sheikh Atif, who had managed to flee.
Rawalpindi Commissioner Zahid Saeed said stern action would be taken against everyone involved in organising and executing the race. The race was allegedly sponsored by a leading telecom company but no one was available for comment. Majid Naeem, the driver, lost control of his car that headed straight into a crowd, killing Suhail Khan, his son Danyal Khan and Babar Ali instantly.
Two others, Aslam Yar and Mohsin Javed, succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Witnesses said around 6,000 people, including children, had gathered in Bahria Town to watch the car race, adding that no safety measures were put in place to secure the crowd or the race itself.
Shaikh Atif, resident of Rawalpindi, had organised the rally in collaboration with the administration of Bahria Town and a private company. According to SSP Raja Amjad, an FIR had been registered against Atif and Naeem, adding that the organisers had not taken permission from the city administration to organise the event.
Rawalpindi DCO said when the request to hold the car race was turned down, the organisers moved the venue to Bahria Town, which fell under the Islamabad territory. However, Islamabad deputy commissioner denied granting any permission to organisers to conduct the event.
