KARACHI: More than 200 people have been abducted from various parts of the country in the tenure of the incumbent government – swelling the unofficial count of missing persons to more than 10,000 over the past nine years, Defence of Human Rights Pakistan (DHRP) Chairwoman Aamna Masood Janjua told Pakistan Today on Monday.
“Of the updated list provided by the DHRP to a federal-level inquiry commission, some 244 people have gone missing in the recent past. As many as 135 people have been abducted from Punjab, 65 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 17 from Balochistan, 13 from Karachi, nine from the Tribal Areas and five from Azad Kashmir,” Aamna said.
She said the current government claims to be a democratic one, but there was no shift in the policies handed down by a dictator. She said that families of many missing persons are not getting registered with the DHRP since they are receiving threats from abductors.
“More than 10,000 persons have gone missing from different parts of the country, but only about 3,500 people registered their complaints with the government. Even this data is not being provided to the DHRP,” Aamna said. “More than 820 persons have been abducted from Sindh, out of which 80 percent belong to Karachi.”
