KARACHI: The growing political pressure has become a hurdle in appointment of faculty of Islamic learning dean at the University of Karachi despite passing nearly two years of Jalaluddin Noori’s suspension as a dean, Pakistan Today learnt on Monday.
Faculty of Islamic Learning has been working without permanent dean for the last 21 months due to growing political pressure for reappointment of Jalaluddin Noori as dean. Noori was suspended by syndicate of the varsity when he was found guilty in plagiarism cases
An insider told Pakistan Today, the Karachi University Plagiarism Committee has recommended the syndicate to dismiss Jalauddin Noori when he failed to provide evidences to prove his PhD degree. The committee also charged Jalaluddin Noori for changing his date of birth from 1950 to 1956 to extend his deanship tenure up to six years
Noori got his old NIC bearing number as 503-50-220215 on February 02, 1982 and joined the university on August 01, 1988, the insider said, adding that he changed his date of birth from 1950 to 1956 during issuance of ‘service book’ from university, but he forgot to change date of birth in words and submitted the book in record.
He said Noori was promoted on the rank of assistant professor by submitting the fake PhD degree on December 18, 1989 and was appointed as associate professor by the then syndicate on October 29, 2000. Shortly, he was promoted again on the rank of professor on September 25, 2001. In short period of four days, the university received verification letter from NADRA, which confirmed his date of birth 1950.
Insider said the university syndicate had sealed off his file and formed committee to look into the matter and asked for a detailed report. The committee in its report said, Noori made his new computerised NIC from District Jamshoro, he said.
On October 03 2001, the KU registrar at that time had written a letter to NADRA to verify his CNIC, which also confirmed Noori’s date of birth as 1950.
He said Noori’s PhD supervisor Dr Abdul Rasheed showed reservations over his submitted thesis and requested Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, the then dean to recertify Noori research paper.
Another Associate Professor Dr Nasir Ahmed Akhtar had sent a parcel, containing fake Jalaluddin Noori thesis, to Prof Dr Atta-ur Rehman, the former Chairman Higher Education Commission, he said.
He said both complainants claimed that the thesis submitted by Jalaluddin Noori to Board of Advance Studies and Research (BASR) was actually translation of an Arabic research conducted by Dr Qahtan Abdur Rehman, Associate Professor at the University of Baghdad.
They claimed that the degree of ‘Shahadat-al-Faragh’ (equivalent to MA Arabic and Islamic Studies) has been obtained from Tanzeemul Madaaris, Lahore without participation in the annual examination, he added.
He said that the mark sheet neither mentioned Noori’s name nor his father, but there was pasted photograph on the mark sheet and signature and stamp of Nazim-e-Aala of the Tanzeemul Madaaris. They claimed that Dr Noori got BA degree from University of Baghdad on June 30, 1977 with official seal and signature of the then vice chancellor, but there was no VC of the unversity at that time.
Shahana Urooj Kazmi, KU Pro-Vice Chancellor (PVC) told Pakistan Today the syndicate of the university would soon decide fate of vacant dean post in Faculty of Islamic Learning. During the last syndicate meeting, the members stressed to resolve the issue, but due to absence of Sindh High Court (SHC) representative, it has failed to take final decision in this regard. To a question about reappointment of suspended dean, she said the Jalaluddin Noori was still suspended not dismissed by the university and hinted that he could be considered in next syndicate meeting.
