LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif disposed of a suo motu proceeding on the death of an eunuch, Amir, allegedly shot by Allama Iqbal Town police. SSP (investigation) Zulfiqar Hameed on Monday informed that Allama Iqbal Town police had arrested eunuch Amir and was taking him to the police station when he jumped from van. Upon jumping he sustained serious injuries and died.
Hameed admitted ‘criminal negligence’ on the part of police and confirmed that a case had been lodged against a sub-inspector, assistant sub-inspector and constable in this regard. He said the officials had been suspended and an investigation had been started. The SSP promised a challan before a trial court soon. The LHC CJ had taken suo motu notice on a news item published in different newspapers.
Newsreports claimed Allama Iqbal Town Police allegedly murdered Amir and later gave the murder the colour of an accident. Members of eunuch (Khawaja Sira) community protested following the incident and demanded action against those responsible. Taking notice of the incident, the LHC CJ observed that eunuchs under enjoyed equal protection like other citizens under the law of the country and could not be discriminated against.
