LAHORE: The Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Resident Association Elections (2010-2013) were held on Sunday and Rohail Ikram Ul Haq was elected unopposed as its new president.
Rohail vowed to play the role of the bridge between DHA residents and administration to help resolve all community problems without any delay. Election Commissioner Group Captain Tayyab Siddiqui accompanied by Arshad Ali Mirza and Prof Mubasher Gora announced the election of the new governing body and executive body as unopposed in a ceremony at a local hotel at Main Boulevard Defense.
The newly elected body will take the helm of affairs with effect from January 1 as per rules and regulation laid down in the constitution. The new addition in the body is the constitution of women wing headed by senior journalist Nisar Fatima. Col (r) Z I Farrukh was elected as vice president, Azam Nasir as general secretary, Col (r) Mian Asad as joint secretary, Mian Tabassum Ali as information secretary and Naseer Ahmed as finance secretary.
Before the elections, Annual General Meeting of DHA Resident Association was held and showcased a number of demands to DHA. They demanded that DHA should devise a traffic plan to ease DHA residents living by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s residence, as commuters suffered traffic jams owing to VIP movement of the premier.
They also demanded the construction of speed breakers and cat-eyes to reduce road mishaps. They raised objections on the non-availability of parking space at the cinema in U block. Revamping U-turns at Main Boulevard Defence and construction of mosques be in P and B blocks was also demanded. Showing concerns on unauthorized sport activities in EE-block, residents raised the points regarding traffic jam at Bhatta Chowk and insufficient presence of security guards.
Addressing on the occasion, DHA Resident Association president said newly elected body will do its best to ensure residents’ participation in decision-making.
Z.I Farrukh underlined the need for amending the Constitution of Pakistan to abolish the role of cantonment boards in DHA. He said cantonment boards took property tax from the residents but never bothered to spend on the welfare of residents, thus DHA should be authorized to collect tax so that it could utilize them for the development.
