ISLAMABAD: In its third meeting today (Saturday), the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) will likely nominate two judges for the Supreme Court and 32 judges for the country’s high courts (HCs), including the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court.
The meeting will discuss nominations for two judges of the Supreme Court – replacements for Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafferi, who retired on May 5 and November 20, respectively.
The meeting is also expected to decide the fate of 32 additional judges of the four high courts, who have completed their tenure but continue to function because of the stay granted by the Supreme Court.
The meeting will also discuss the appointment of a chief justice for the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which is likely to start functioning on December 13.
On May 11, the National Assembly had adopted a bill for the establishment of a seven-judge IHC under the 18th Amendment. The other seven judges of the IHC will be nominated later.
A notification for establishment of the IHC had already been issued and the four provinces and FATA would be given representation in the court.
