LAHORE: Jameela (23), who was allegedly burned alive by her husband and in-laws on October 9, died in Mayo Hospital on Friday and her family staged a protest in front of the Lahore Press Club.
According to the police, Kamran married Jameela five years ago and had been living with her in a rented house in Millat Park. Police said Kamran wanted to marry a second time and had been trying to persuade Jameela, but she would have none of it.
On October 9, Kamran took Jameela to her sister’s house, in the same locality, and asked her to allow him to take another wife. Upon her refusal, they both quarreled and Kamran doused her with petrol and burnt her alive.
Later, Kamran informed the police and Jameela’s family that Jameela tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire. Police took Jameela to Mayo Hospital where she said in her legal statement that her husband Kamran and sisters-in-law tried to kill her.
On Friday Jameela’s family put Jameela’s body on the road and swore not to leave until the police arrested the people responsible for Jameela’s death. They alleged that the police had been bribed and were trying to protect the perpetrator.
Later the protestors dispersed peacefully after police officials promised to arrest Kamran and his sisters.
