ISLAMABAD: Embezzlement worth Rs 2.58 million was committed in the name of computer literacy and promotion of use of Internet for educational purposes in Islamabad.
The audit report 2009-10 of Pakistan Computer Bureau (PCB) said it initiated a project titled “Introduction of Computer Education in 81 Federal Government (FG) Model Colleges and Schools in ICT” with the objective of equipping 81 selected schools and colleges with computer labs and Internet.
“Rs 5.10 million were allocated to provide Internet services for selected schools and colleges.
In June 2009, the PCB paid Rs 2.58 million to a supplier, selected without seeking tenders, for provision of DSL connection in 70 FG model colleges and schools in Islamabad,” says the report.
The report points out that no evidence was available with the PCB for the satisfactory provision of Internet services to 70 schools and colleges. “Auditor General of Pakistan’s office selected six schools and colleges on sample basis to verify the installation of DSL and found that no such services were provided for any of these locations,” reveals the report, adding the payment of Rs 2.58 million was ‘doubtful.’
