ISLAMABAD: The law enforcement agencies on Friday foiled a major terrorist plot in the capital city by arresting two terrorists who were allegedly planning to attack important buildings, including the Parliament House.
The two suspected terrorists, Naeemullah Khan and Adnan Khan, were arrested in the Margalla police precincts. “They were planning to carry out a suicide attack on a mosque, Syedna Ali Masjid in Sector F-8/1, where foreigners and diplomats reside,” Islamabad Deputy Inspector General Bin Yamin said. He said police also recovered suicide jackets from their possession and registered an FIR against them.
The two men were handlers of suicide attackers, he said. A police team, headed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Faisal Bashir Memon, arrested the suspected terrorists along with the suicide vests weighing five kilogrammes. According to police officials, both men were waiting for suicide attackers outside the mosque. Another police official said the terrorists belonged to Bannu district.
He said former prayer leader Qari Munir was removed by the mosque management committee with the consent of residents of the locality after a dispute over the prayer leading.
“Another cleric, Qari Saleh Muhammad Saqi, was appointed in his place and which the suspected terrorists did not like as most likely they had their sympathies with Qari Munir and that could have prompted them to plan an assault on the mosque,” he said.
The law enforcement have arrested many extremists which is certainly a good sign. On the other hand, i feel that these terrorists should be properly interrogated so that we can develop counter strategies towards them.
This is height of absurdity. It is important that each and every prayer leader should be appointed by the government, who is not biased and against a particular sect or religion. It is important because only a rational debate would bring these aggrieved people back into the mainstream, not these tactics. These suicide vests are basically homemade IEDs that are easily assembled, because materials are easily available. There should be control over these IEDs.
Media should highlight the stories of those who are no longer invilved in radical activities.
