ISLAMABAD: The restriction on migration from non-European states to United Kingdom was global and not Pakistan-specific, UK High Commissioner Adam Thomson said in a press conference on Wednesday.
“The UK’s coalition government seeks to tighten migration taking place from all non-European Union states,” he said. Steps were recently taken by the UK government to reduce the number of people migrating for work or residence to create more job opportunities for British citizens, according to media reports.
He further added that it was not a protectionist policy and his government would continue absorbing skilled and talented people. “An annual limit of 21,700 for non-EU workers, 20,700 for investors and skilled workers and 1000 for highly skilled or exceptionally talented people has been introduced,” the High Commissioner added.
The student visa policy was still being debated, he said, adding that it was likely that only students applying for degree classes would be given visas.
