PIMS politics claims woman’s life

ISLAMABAD: Doctor’s negligence and departmental politics took the life of Nadia Ahmed, a 23-year-old expecting mother at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Monday.
Married two years ago in Koral Town, Nadia was admitted to the delivery ward of the hospital a day before Eidul Azha. She died soon after giving birth to her first baby, a beautiful son. A medical student was asked to handle this normal delivery case since no senior doctor was available, sources said, adding that the experienced doctor was only called in when the case got serious.
“Two operations were done in 40 minutes but the patient’s internal bleeding could not be controlled,” they said, adding that the baby too received a deep cut on his face.
“There are two gynaecology units in PIMS headed by Dr Ghazala and Dr Saeeda Batool. The doctors don’t attend patients across units because of internal politics,” alleged the source observing that patients were usually attended by Post Graduate (PG) students in the labor room of the hospital.
“It (PIMS) is a slaughter house.
I will raise this issue on every forum and will get a murder case registered against the responsible doctors,” Sagheer Ahmed, Nadia’s husband, said while talking to Pakistan Today.
When contacted PIMS spokesman Dr Waseem Khuwaja said that a two-member inquiry committee had been constituted and report would be made public soon.
