LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Secretary Information MNA Ahsan Iqbal has said that Reformed General Sales Tax (GST) will be a disaster for the national economy.
He told Pakistan Today on Friday that GST imposition would entail another wave of price hike and the PML-N would never allowed the enforcement of this tax. He said the government was trying to achieve a revenue boost by imposing a repressive tax but it was mistaken because such an objective could not be achieved in the presence of rampant corruption.
He said that a boost in revenue generation was possible only after closing down the loopholes for corruption and the reorientation of economic policy towards people’s welfare.
Commenting on the finance minister’s statement in which he said that public corporations made corruption of Rs 250 billion, the PML-N leader said if the government could curb the corruption, the country would save more revenue than expected from the enforcement of GST.
The PPP-led government would have to put an end to its non-development expenses, while reducing the size of its cabinet that was exceeding 100 ministers, ha said.
It was regrettable that the government was retrieving its profligate expenditures from people by imposing new taxes and when it was asked to help the flood-stricken people, it dallied on the pretext of financial crunch, Iqbal said.
