ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-N and the Pakistan Muslim League-Q on Thursday reached a consensus over nominations for parliamentary committee for the appointment of judges to superior courts.
In Senate, Leader of Opposition Wasim Sajjad replaced his name with PML-N’s Senator Ishaq Dar, while Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain will still be the nominee of his party. In National Assembly, Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan nominated Sardar Mehtab Abbasi from the PML-N and PML-Q’s Ghous Bux Mehar to be members of the committee from the opposition.
Senator Dar held a meeting with Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain the other day in the chamber of Senator Wasim Sajjad to discuss the nominations for the parliamentary committee for the appointment of judges. According to Article 175A, the leader of the opposition in the Senate had to nominate two members from the opposition benches, but Sajjad nominated himself and PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Husssain, ignoring the PML-N, JI and other opposition parties.
A source in the PML-N said Senator Dar took up the matter with the PML-Q president, asking him that it was unfair to nominate both members from one party, when the opposition in parliament was represented more than one party.
“In response to Dar’s complaint, Shujaat offered him that the opposition leader in the senate was ready to nominate one member from the PML-N if the opposition leader in the National Assembly nominated one PML-Q member from the opposition benches of the National Assembly for the committee,” said the source.
