Govt will curb misuse of Watan Cards, says Malik

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to take strict action against the misuse of Watan Cards by flood victims. It has come to notice of interior ministry that certain flood victims had sold their Watan Cards at Rs 20,000 and the user of such Watan Cards would be arrested and charged under the fraud act.
The flood affected people are getting Rs 20,000 on each Watan Card as well as assistance of Rs 80,0000 for rehabilitation. In a statement issued here on Sunday, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said NADRA made it possible for the government to collect data of flood affected people and issue them assistance in a ‘record time’.
“NADRA has world largest database of registered population, adding that so far one million Watan Cards have been issued to flood affected people, while 300,000 CNICs have also been issued,” he added. He further said that those employees of the Authority who took part in registration of flood affected people would be sent on Hajj through balloting.
He said floods caused one of the largest human displacements in the history and the government had to deal with it efficiently with the help of NADRA. He said that the issuance of one million NADRA Watan Cards proved its capabilities ensuring transparent aid disbursement among the flood affected people.
Malik said that throughout the process NADRA ensured that no deserving flood victim should be left without cash assistance while no imposter should be entitled for cash assistance. He said that the Watan Cards project would continue till the registration of last flood affected victim was done.
