ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet Division is yet to materialise a proposal of setting up the Courier Regulatory Authority (CRA) as about a year ago the Ministry of Interior had expressed concerns over the dispatch of contrabands and anti-state material abroad.
According to an official source, the federal government had decided to constitute the CRA under the Ministry of Postal Services on the pattern of bodies like National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) to provide an institutional mechanism to regulate the courier industry mainly run by the private sector.
Presently, the private courier companies are operating without any regulatory framework and the need of a regulatory mechanism was felt after the increasing anti-state activities of the terrorists, including dispatch of contraband and anti-state material abroad.
After receiving a letter from the Ministry of Interior asking to take necessary steps, the Ministry of Postal Services had requested the Cabinet Division to initiate a process for setting up the CRA, but the proposal has not been materialise yet.
