KARACHI: The 2008-10 Sindh government project “Promotion of Kitchen Gardening in Rural Areas”, a victim of nepotism and corruption, is incomplete to date, an official asking not to be named told the Pakistan Today.
The scheme cost Rs 19.217 million and was aimed at promoting kitchen gardening amongst rural women by providing technical and financial assistance and imparting education about disease and pest control.
Six resource people were nominated from the Sindh Horticulture Research Institute, Mirpurkhas – two for Tando Jam, three for Mirpurkhas and one for Kot Diji – with a monthly salary of Rs 8,000 and 400 women trainees were also appointed to impart training to women, the sources claimed,
adding that “These women were appointed because of their political affiliation and were drawing salaries ranging from Rs 8,000 to 10,000 from the provincial exchequer without performing their job.”
Millions of rupees were misappropriated by agriculture officers of Hyderabad because of lack of monitoring. Many complaints were received by the Agriculture Department from the selected areas of the project, but no action was taken against any official concerned.
