KARACHI: A protest was staged outside the press club by a grieved 17-year-old boy’s mother with the assistance of civil society organizations to condemn the kidnapping of her son by the police five months ago.
On May 20, Imran Jokhio was on his way to his village in a rickshaw when Head Constable Ilyas Sehto and Constable Ghulam Rasool Marri ‘abducted’ him at Mafi Faqir Bridge in Naushehro Feroze district, Shahina, his mother, said.
“My son worked at a tailor’s shop in Naushehro Feroze. They took him away to an unknown place without any reason,” she said. She was informed of his abduction next morning by Naeem Mallah, a friend of Imran. “I went to police station thrice, but was not allowed to meet him,” she said.
“I told the villagers about my son’s abduction. We held demonstrations and the SHO and the DSP assured us that Imran would be recovered within three days but to no avail,” she added. After a few days, the police, under pressure from the media and the villagers, registered an FIR against the two policemen who were arrested and sent to sub-jail, Naushehro Feroze. Her son is still missing.
“The police have been threatening me and I am afraid that they might kill my son in a fake encounter or implicate him in false cases,” said the scared mother. Aurat Foundation’s Mehnaz Rehman, Salma Murad and Lala Hassan Pathan and convener of the All Parties Alliance Naushehro Feroze Gul Moro participated in the protest rally.
