LAHORE: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jehangir said on Thursday she would play her role for an independent judiciary without taking sides of either the government or the judiciary.
She made these remarks while talking to journalists on the Lahore High Court (LHC) premises. Asma thanked her voters and supporters for helping her in winning the elections. She said that an independent bar was necessary for an independent judiciary and both were two parallel institutions.
She said that lawyers had elected an independent and enlightened bar in the elections, adding that she would continue supporting the judiciary by protecting the fundamental rights of people, as they were violated at every level. Asma said that she was not afraid of any president, prime minister, general or judge.
“We believe in giving due respect and vice versa,” she added. The newly-elected SCBA president said that lawyers would not care for their lives and would go to jails for upholding the constitution and for the cause of an independent judiciary and human rights issues.
She vowed to continue her struggle for the provision of justice to the suppressed segments of society, including prisoners. Asma spent sometime in the bar rooms and exchanged greetings with her supporters and voters who had chosen her despite the propaganda of her rivals.
A large number of lawyers congratulated the human rights activist on her landmark victory and distributed sweets amongst each other.
