The people will take to the streets if the government does not mend its ways and fulfill its promises, and it should deliver on the people’s demands before its too late, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday.
Criticising the government for its performance, Nawaz said the government should be more committed to the country’s cause, ethics and democracy. “If the government does not mend its ways and makes good on its promises made with the people, the masses will come out on the roads again to get their demands and needs fulfilled,” he said.
He told reporters that the PML-N would not allow institutions to clash with one another but the freedom of the Supreme Court must be respected, adding that some elements within the government wanted a clash between parliament and the judiciary. “These elements are busy in busy utilizing every possible measure for the purpose,” he said.
Nawaz said inflation in the country had increased because of the actions of the present government, adding that it could be brought down if the government took stern action against corruption in major state institutions. The PML-N chief regretted a recent report by Transparency International, which said the country had gone up seven places in the list of most corrupt countries.
To a query on the prime minister’s role, he said the PM needed to make prudent decisions and should be more committed to the country than with the party. Nawaz said ethics came first and politics followed, adding that the government should follow its political slogans and fulfill the promises made during election campaigns.
He said the government should implement the verdicts of the Supreme Court despite of its clash with the judiciary. Nawaz held former military ruler Pervez Musharraf responsible for the ongoing wave of terrorism and unrest in Balochistan.
The former prime minister said load shedding, drone attacks, the deteriorating law and order in Balochistan and missing persons were gifts to the nation by former president Pervez Musharraf.
He said the meeting between Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Babar Awan would have no impact on the PML-N. “We will not be affected by any meeting between the PPP and the PML-Q. We believe in principled politics only.””If foreign aid arrives in the country only to be stolen, who will offer any aid for a second time,” Nawaz added.
