Deinotherium fossils discovered

LAHORE
A unique discovery of the fossils of Deinotherium, primitive animal species, was found during an excavation at Lava village. This massive beast is known to have lived between Miocene and Pleistocene epochs. Its ancestors or descendants are not yet known with complete confirmation due to non-availability of fossil record. These newly discovered fossils are reported to be 14 million years old.
The excavation was conducted under the supervision of Chairman Department of Zoology and Registrar University of the Punjab Dr Muhammad Akhtar. The discovery of the fossils is of great significance from an evolutionary point of view since they may provide information about historical changes in climate and the proximate cause of the species extinction.
Fossils of Rhinoceros, Giraffids, Suids and Bovids were also discovered from Dhok Bun Ameer Khatoon, Chakwal. Their age is calculated to be more than 8 million years. Dr Muhammad Akhtar stated that the these discoveries have the potential of adding greatly to the study of paleontology.
