ISLAMABAD
Pakistan and the United Kingdom on Tuesday renewed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) allowing the deportation of illegal immigrants from the two countries back to their respective homelands.
The renewed MoU will cover illegal immigrants only and it is no way an extradition treaty or understanding to exchange criminals, Federal Minister for Interior Rehman Malik said at a joint press conference with British Home Secretary Theresa May, who is also incharge of women and equality issues.
Earlier, both leaders held a meeting at the Interior Ministry and took up a number of issues. Malik said both countries had discussed how to move forward on a number of issues. He said illegal immigrants deported from the UK would be prosecuted in accordance with local law and human traffickers would also be taken to task.
The British home secretary said the MoU’s renewal was part of bilateral efforts to strengthen immigration system.
