CJP chairs meeting to nominate JCP members

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who is also the chairman of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), on Monday chaired a meeting to establish and make the JCP operational under Article 175-A of the constitution.
The CJ held consultation with the two senior most judges of the Supreme Court – Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan. The issue taken up in Monday’s meeting was nomination of a former chief justice or former judge of the Supreme Court as JCP member for a two-year term under Article 175A (2)(iii) and the nomination of a former chief justice or judge of the Lahore High Court as one time member under Article 175(5)(iv)-1st Proviso.
Regarding the first issue, the meeting discussed in detail various names for the position and unanimously decided on the name of Justice Ali Hussain Qazlibash, former judge of the Supreme Court for nomination for the position for two years. Regarding the second issue, the members discussed the issue of retirement of the incumbent LHC chief justice, who is due to retire on December 8, 2010.
After thorough deliberations, the members unanimously decided to nominate Justice Mian Allah Nawaz, former LHC chief justice as the one-time member for the JCP meeting for nomination of the LHC chief justice to the parliamentary committee.
On the directions of the SC CJ, letters have been written to chief justices of the Federal Shariat Court and all high courts to take steps necessary for constituting the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. Similarly, letters have also been written to the Pakistan Bar Council and four provincial bar councils for nominating senior advocates and forwarding their names to the Supreme Court registrar to complete the composition of the commission and for its notification in the Gazette of Pakistan.
