Kite flying was observed in Township, Ichra and the walled city on Sunday, despite ban. Hide and seek between the police and the kite flyers continued the entire weekend; 20 kite flyers have been arrested in the last
two days.
A few days ago, city division police had ordered action against the kite manufacturers and flyers especially after the death of a 24-year-old Rizwan who was killed in Shafeeq Abad when a kite string slit his throat. Police have confiscated kites and related material by raiding different areas including Misri Shah, Badami Bagh, Taxali Gate, Yakki Gate, Bhati gate, Mohni Road Shahdra, Anarkali, Shafiq Abad and Ravi Road.
Police officials at the Akbari Gate said that they had been ordered to deal with the kite flyers and manufacturers sternly and they had cleared their area from any such activity.
Kite manufacturers have criticized the Punjab government and have asked to lift the ban on kite manufacturing; banning only the metal string which was causing deaths. The Punjab government insists that they were only obeying the Lahore High Court’s verdict. Rising death toll attributable to kites has become a headache for the Punjab government.
