A rivals’ clash at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Friday left one dead and six injured, exposing the security arrangements of the hospital as well as local police apparatus.
The incident occurred outside the gate of the emergency ward in a broad daylight in the presence of hundreds of patients and visitors. The two rival groups, led by Naeem and Chaudhry Riaz, clashed over a land dispute in the Tarlai area in the limits of Koral police precincts.
As the members of one group were off-loading two injured people at the hospital’s emergency gate, their rival group fired at them. During the exchange of fire, Talib Hussain, Ijaz Hussain and Amer from Riaz Group and Naeem, the head of the other group, were injured and shifted to PIMS.
Later, the relatives of Naeem reached the emergency gate and opened fire, injuring four people, including Azizur Rehman, Ibrar and Tariq. The injured were shifted to the emergency ward where Azizur Rehman succumbed to his injuries. The condition of Naeem is also critical.
PIMS Executive Director Dr Mehmood Jamal told reporters that the incident occurred for lack of security outside the hospital. SHO Muhammad Hussain Lasi, when contacted, said the police were regularly conducting strict checking outside the hospital. He said the police were conducting raids for the arrest of the accused.
