The government has launched a covert operation against assassins in Karachi and another 3,000 policemen will be recruited for the city to maintain peace in the country’s financial hub, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said on Friday.
“We will restore peace in Karachi and other parts of the country. Strict action will be taken against those challenging the writ of the state,” he said during a joint press conference with Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Ali Mirza. Malik said the city was in the grip of the bhatta, drug and land-grabbing mafias.
To a question, Malik said the government was working to address the grievances of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the atmosphere of reconciliation was much stronger than before. The Sindh home minister said the police had arrested a key suspect involved in targeted killings in the city.
“Critics should refrain from indulging in aggressive debates, which create problems for the government,” he said. Mirza urged all parties to cooperate with the government in eliminating the menace of targeted killings. He said police had killed a notorious bandit, Qadri Chachar, on Friday who carried a head-money of Rs 1.5 million.
Earlier, Malik chaired a meeting that took up the situation in Karachi. The meeting was attended by the Sindh home minister, Rangers DG, Sindh IGP, DIGs and other officials of police and intelligence.
