Failing low intensity blast investigations linger on

LAHORE: Lahore Police has been unable to make any arrests for involvement in the 45 low intensity bombings that have rocked different areas of the provincial capital since October 2008 intelligence agency sources disclosed to Pakistan Today on Monday.
Police officials have often claimed to have arrests but no one has been produced in front of either media or the courts in relation to the low intensity attacks. This is despite a local terrorist organization, Tahafuz-e-Nazria-e-Pakistan, claiming responsibility for the juice corner and Alhamra Cultural Complex blasts no progress was reported.
It was also revealed police officials including Superintendent of Police Zeeshan Asghar were informed before the Tibbi City area cracker blasts but no one was able to stop them.
Tall claims: Senior Superintendent of Police (Investigations) Zulifqar Hameed while talking to the media after cracker blasts in Tibbi City area claimed police had very strong leads and would soon arrest those responsible.
A similar lcaim was made by (former) Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Chaudhary Shafiq Gujjar after seven cracker blasts in the Iqbal Town area. Arrests were claimed but no challans were presented in courts.
Only lead: Intelligence agency and police sources revealed the only lead investigation teams possess is the mobile number from which a number of police officials and journalists received warning messages. The sources revealed the number was traced by intelligence agencies to Dubai with the phone only used for messaging.
The sources claimed serious questions have been raised about the ability of police to make progress in ongoing investigations adding that the threat of such attacks is lingering on. Inspector General of Punjab Police, however while talking to media confirmed that despite serious efforts to trace and apprehend those involved, police are yet to have found success in any of the low intensity blast probes.
