PCB Friday appointed Shahid Afridi captain for the limited over series against South Africa later this month and recalled batsman Misbah-ul-Haq to lead in the two Tests next month.
Afridi led the team in the 2-3 defeat against England last month but Pakistan Cricket Board deferred the announcement of the captain on Thursday. A part of the delay was associated with the PCB chief Ijaz Butt, who was not satisfied with the leadership skills shown by Afridi during the England series. Reports also suggested that Butt was also cross with Shahid over certain statements he made to the media. After the limited over team was announced without the captain, other candidates were considered for the job. But when a worthy replacement could not be figured out, Afridi was reinstated.
A 16-man Test squad was also announced Friday.
Pakistan play two Twenty20, five one-day and two Tests against South Africa in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The first T20 will be played on October 26.
Test squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umer, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Yousuf, Umar Akmal, Azhar Ali, Saeed Ajmal, Danish Kaneria, Abdul Rehman, Zulqarnain Haider, Umar Gul, Tanveer Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanveer (subject to fitness)
