NA-4 by-polls: ECP asks candidates to follow law provisions



ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked political parties and candidates vying for the NA-4 Peshawar-IV by-election to follow the provisions of law, and exercise self-restraint to hold for the conduct of the election in an orderly and peaceful manner on October 26.

According to ECP, the commission has drawn the attention of the candidates to the provision of Section 84 of the Representation of the People Act, 1976.

The section provides that no person will convene, hold or attend any public meeting and no person will promote or join any procession within the area of the constituency during a period of 48 hours ending at midnight following the conclusion of the poll for an election in that constituency. It says any person who contravenes these provisions of the law will be punishable with rigorous imprisonment for a term, which may extend to six months or with fine, which may extend to Rs 1,000 or with both.

Election campaigns in the constituency will come to an end with effect from the midnight falling between the October 24 and 25.

Meanwhile, the ECP has finalized arrangements for the by-election. Fourteen candidates including five of various national political parties and nine independents are in the run. The seat fell vacant due to death of former MNA Gulzar Khan of the PTI in August this year.
